Hyperpigmentation Treatment in Severna Park, MD | Skinlogic
Most babies are born with flawless, beautiful skin, but years of unprotected sun exposure can take their toll in the form of hyperpigmentation. These dark spots marring your complexion form when your skin produces excess melanin, a natural brown pigment.
Your skin’s natural reaction to UV rays is to make more melanin, which blocks radiation from creating further damage. Sometimes, the sun causes an uneven influx of melanin, which clumps together and spills between skin cells, causing dark marks.
At Skinlogic, Meredith Baker, NP, and her team of experts offer specialized treatments designed to break apart these clumps of melanin and help your skin heal evenly. These solutions include microneedling, spot laser treatments, and custom chemical peels. During your personalized evaluation, we will determine the best option for your aesthetic goals and lifestyle.

What is Hyperpigmentation?
Otherwise known as discoloration or dark spots, hyperpigmentation is any area that appears darker than the surrounding skin. It can appear in various forms, including sunspots, melasma, and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation caused by acne, bug bites, and other conditions.
Anyone can develop dark spots, regardless of their skin type, tone, or ethnicity. However, the type and triggers will vary. People with fair skin may be more susceptible to sun spots from UV exposure, while darker-complected people are more likely to experience post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.
Additionally, women who are pregnant or taking hormonal contraceptives, as well as people who suffer from eczema or psoriasis, are more prone to developing dark spots like melasma or PIH from hormonal fluctuations or inflammation.
The different types of hyperpigmentation include the following.
- Sunspots: Sunspots develop from prolonged UV exposure. They commonly form on areas that experience frequent sun exposure, such as the cheeks, forehead, hands, shoulders, and arms.
- Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation: PIH results from trauma or inflammation of the skin. It’s the primary reason dermatologists and aestheticians caution against picking at breakouts. You’ll likely notice the injured area appears darker than the surrounding skin after a pimple has healed.
- Melasma: Melasma, also called the “mask of pregnancy,” is symmetrical, brownish facial pigmentation that often forms on the forehead, cheeks, and upper lip. It typically relates to hormonal changes and sun exposure and is more common in women than men.
- Age or liver spots: Resembling sunspots, liver or age spots are flat brown blemishes that appear due to long-term sun exposure.
Treatments for Hyperpigmentation at Skinlogic
Dark spots can be challenging to treat at home, even with the most expensive, high-end products, because most commercially available brands can’t reach past the superficial level of your skin. Excess melanin often has roots that reach down to the second layer of skin, and the only way to access this layer is through more intensive treatments.
Microneedling
Microneedling is a versatile solution for multiple skin concerns, including acne scars, wrinkles, enlarged pores, and hyperpigmentation. It is ideal for restoring an even tone and improving skin firmness and texture. The procedure involves a device equipped with hundreds of ultra-fine needles. As the tool moves over your skin, it creates micro-injuries that stimulate your body’s healing response, boosting collagen and elastin production and breaking apart hyperpigmentation patches for a brighter, healthier-looking complexion.
Laser Treatment
Laser Treatment is a non-invasive cosmetic procedure that uses precision technology to target and treat pigmentation issues. Modern lasers are a safe and effective way to improve your complexion and achieve a more youthful, glowing, and even skin tone.
The laser we use emits a beam of light that breaks down melanin for your body to reabsorb naturally. Prior to your laser appointment, we will clean your skin and give you protective eyewear. Once you are comfortable, your provider will begin targeting areas of hyperpigmentation. Most clients find treatment to be entirely tolerable, often comparing it to quick snaps from a rubber band.
Our laser skin care treatment requires little downtime; you can return to daily activities immediately afterward.
Chemical Peels
VI Chemical peel treatments contain a synergistic blend of powerful skin reviving ingredients safe for all skin types and tones. Under the care of a trained professional, the chemical peel is applied to the skin The ingredients inside the chemical peel are designed to lift pigmentation, remove sun damage, alleviate acne and scarring, and slow the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
Our most popular treatment, the VI Precision Plus Peel, is a medium-depth peel that uses ingredients like hydroquinone and brightening agents to suppress the production of melanin while promoting rapid cell turnover. The resurfacing results of the Precision Plus Peel reveals brighter, renewed skin in just one week.
