At Skinlogic, we offer the latest technological advancements to ensure our clients receive top-tier, effective treatments. A perfect example of this is our treatment for leg veins.
If you avoid wearing cute shorts, bikinis, or dresses because you don’t want others to see the dark blue or red veins up and down your legs, you’re not alone. Spider veins affect millions of people across the globe. They are generally not painful, but spider veins can significantly impact someone’s self-confidence, forcing them to wear pants in the heat of the summer or a cover-up at the pool to avoid showing off their legs.
At Skinlogic in Severna Park, MD, Family Nurse Practitioner Meredith Baker and her team of specialists want to help restore your confidence with leg vein treatments so you can feel comfortable showing off your legs this summer. Our leg vein treatments are non-invasive and highly effective at targeting the coloration within the veins, helping to shrink them down so that they disappear seamlessly with the rest of your skin tone.
We invite you to schedule a personalized consultation at Skinlogic by calling (410) 220-5499 or contacting us through our online consultation form. We are located in Severna Park and extend our services to our neighboring cities in Millersville, Glen Burnie, Pasadena, Annapolis, Crofton, Gambrills, Odenton, and Bowie.
What Are Leg Veins?
Legs veins are generally categorized into two main types: spider veins and varicose veins.
Spider veins, medically referred to as telangiectasias, are damaged vessels that can be seen through the skin. They get their name because they typically resemble spider webs. While typically painless, spider veins can cause discomfort or itchiness. They can appear in different colors, including red, purple, and dark blue, and appear nearly anywhere on the body but are most commonly found on the calves and ankles.
Varicose veins are larger, swollen vessels that are more noticeable and painful than their counterpart spider veins. Healthy veins lay straight under the skin, while varicose veins twist and turn like a stream or a river. This twisting of the veins is very noticeable and most commonly found on the lower legs or thighs.
At Skinlogic, our laser treats spider veins.
What Are the Common Causes of Leg Veins?
Leg veins are generally caused by the following factors:
- Genetics
- Jobs that require extended standing periods
- Long-term obesity
- Medical history of blood clots
- Drastic hormonal changes
- Birth control methods
- Hormone replacement therapies
- Major damage to the skin’s surface
- Vein surgery
- Aging
Laser Treatment for Leg Veins
A common leg vein treatment that we use at Skinlogic is laser therapy. Laser therapy is quick, effective, and minimally invasive in treating small- or medium-sized leg veins. During laser vein treatment, the laser light administers heat through the skin, damaging the affected veins. Over the next few weeks, medium veins will slowly fade while smaller veins can vanish immediately. There is no need for compression tights or avoiding exercise like sclerotherpy. You will need two or more treatments and these are separated by 3 months.
Who Is a Good Candidate for Leg Vein Treatments?
Good candidates for leg vein treatment are individuals with noticeable spider veins that are damaging their self-confidence. Those who may not be a good candidate for leg vein treatment include individuals who:
- Have superficial or deep vein thrombosis
- Have varicose veins
- Are pregnant or breastfeeding
- Are bedbound or immobile
It’s a common misconception that you can’t receive leg vein treatments if you’re on hormonal birth control. However, you can still receive a leg vein treatment, but you present a higher risk of developing new leg veins in the future.
Additionally, be sure to talk to your doctor if you have a history of blood clots. Contingent upon the cause and severity of the clots, you may be discouraged from undergoing vein treatment.
What to Expect from Leg Vein Treatment
The first step in a leg vein treatment is to have an initial consultation with Nurse Practitioner Meredith Baker. During the initial consultation, she will examine your veins, educate you on your diagnosis, and develop a treatment plan based on your needs and goals.
The laser treatment takes 20 minutes to complete. You’ll lie on your back or stomach in a comfortable chair in one of our private rooms.
During the treatment, you’ll feel a slight snap from the laser, but most patients find treatments to be tolerable without anesthetics. If you feel uncomfortable or want to avoid any discomfort at all, we can provide you with a topical anesthetic to help you relax.
Recovery After a Leg Vein Treatment
You may return to your regular activities, including regular exercise.
For two days after your treatment, follow these essential guidelines to support your results:
- Avoid blood thinning medications for pain relief, including aspirin, ibuprofen, and other anti-inflammatory medications
- Don’t sit in hot baths, spas, or saunas
- Don’t apply hot compresses of any kind to the treatment area
- Apply cold compresses for short periods to help ease discomfort
- Avoid direct sunlight, including tanning beds
